Hyde Vale
Taking inspiration from the modern Dutch and Belgian Schools of Design, we created a paved landing pad immediately to the rear of the house, from which point you would cross a narrow pool extended across the width of the garden. Stepping onto a gravelled area flanked on both sides with lavish perennial planting you make your way to the main paved area at the back of the garden.
There is a steep bank at the back of the garden so we needed to make a strong architectural intervention which would draw the eye to that point and also hold its attention. Two free standing sections of block rendered wall painted in a deep neutral colour with white birch planted to the front, serve to create a focal point whilst having the effect of lengthening the garden at the same time. As these sections of wall were built within the boundary of the garden we happily didn’t have to tamper with the existing retaining wall to the bank.
